Names and verification
Names help people find the right hub, organization or person. This policy explains which names are reserved, what the Official badge means, and when Ascent Collective LLC may take a name back. It is part of our Terms of Service.
Reserved names
Some names are reserved for Hubs, for Ascent Collective LLC and for our products, and some words read as the people who run a place, such as admin, staff, support or official. You can’t use them, or a spelling made to look like them, as a hub name, hub address, organization name or handle. The app tells you when a name is reserved. Ordinary names that only contain a short reserved word are fine.
The Official badge
- The Official badge means Hubs checked that a hub, organization or account really belongs to who it says. Its tooltip says who verified it and why.
- It is not the Hubs Staff badge. Staff wear their own badge, before their name.
- Only Hubs gives the badge. Names, role names and role icons can’t include check marks, the word “verified” or anything else made to look like it.
- Organizations can ask for it by proving they own a domain. Hubs can ask by linking a verified organization or an official website or social account. People are reviewed by hand. Ask in Settings, Profile, Official badge.
- We may remove the badge at any time, for example when a place changes hands or no longer meets this policy. The owner is told why.
Impersonation
Don’t use a name, picture or description to pass yourself off as another person, brand, organization or our team. Parody, fan and commentary spaces are welcome when they say so clearly, for example “Fans of …” or “Unofficial”.
Trademarks
If a name uses your trademark in a way that is likely to confuse people about who runs it, write to us at contact@ascents.gg with the name, your trademark registration or other proof of your rights, and how you can be reached. We may ask the current holder for their side first.
Inactive squatting
Holding a name only to keep it from its rightful owner, or to sell it, isn’t allowed. We may take back a hub address, organization name or handle that has been held this way, especially when it stays unused.
When we take a name back
- Only Hubs staff can take back a name, and only for impersonation, trademarks or inactive squatting. Names that are widely known need two staff members, or a platform owner, to agree.
- The current holder keeps their hub, organization or account. Only the name changes, to a plain new one such as hub-4821 or user_4821. They get a notice in their Inbox with the reason.
- Old links to the name stop leading to the previous holder. The name may then be given to its verified owner.
- Everything we do is recorded in our internal audit trail.
How to appeal
If you think we got it wrong, write to contact@ascents.gg within 30 days with the subject “Names appeal”, the name and why you should keep it. A different member of our team reviews every appeal, and we tell you the outcome.
