Name, archive, lock and reopen threads

Give a thread a name, archive it when it goes quiet, lock it, reopen it, or start a private thread.

A thread is a side conversation under one message. Open it with Open thread on the message, or with the reply count under it. Every thread has a menu, the three dots at the top of the thread, called Thread options. It only shows what you are allowed to do.

Name a thread

  1. When you start a thread, type a name in Thread name (optional) above the reply box. The name is saved with your first reply.
  2. To name or rename a thread later, open Thread options and choose Name thread or Rename thread.
  3. The name shows on the thread under the message, at the top of the thread, in Threads, in notifications and in search. Names are up to 100 characters.

Whoever started a thread and moderators can rename it. In a direct or group conversation, only the person who started it can.

Archive or reopen a thread

  1. Open Thread options and choose Archive thread. It stays readable and searchable, and leaves the open list in Threads.
  2. To find it again, choose Show archived threads in Threads.
  3. To reopen it, choose Reopen thread, or simply reply. A new reply opens it again.

In a hub, a thread with no new replies archives itself after 7 days. People who manage channels can change this in Manage, Channels and rooms, Archive quiet threads: Never, 1, 3, 7 or 30 days. Direct and group conversations never archive by themselves.

Lock a thread

  1. Open Thread options and choose Lock thread, then confirm.
  2. Only moderators can reply in a locked thread. Everyone can still read it.
  3. To let everyone reply again, choose Remove lock.

Private threads

A private thread can only be seen by the people in it, and by people who may manage threads in that channel. It never shows in the channel itself. Owners and admins can always start one. For everyone else, private threads are off until an owner or admin allows Start private threads in Manage, Channel permissions.

Start a private thread

  1. Open the channel's menu and choose Threads.
  2. Under Private threads, choose New private thread.
  3. Give it a name, write the first message and add the people you want. Then choose Start thread.

To add or remove people later, open Thread options in the private thread and choose People. Anyone can leave.
