Direct and group messages

Talk one to one, or start a small group of up to 12 people.

Direct messages are private conversations outside any channel.

Start a direct message

  1. Open Messages, the speech bubble in the top bar (or the bottom bar on a phone).
  2. Choose New message.
  3. Type the person's exact Handle and choose Start conversation.

Start a group

  1. Choose New group next to New message.
  2. Give it a Group name.
  3. Under Invite by handle, add people separated by commas or spaces.

A group holds up to 12 people, you included. People join when they accept, and they see messages from that point on. The person who made the group can rename it, invite and remove people, or hand it to someone else.

By default, people who share a hub with you can message you. You can change that. See Block someone and choose who can reach you.

Call from a conversation

  1. Open the conversation, in the Messages panel or full size.
  2. Choose Call at the top, or the camera for a video call. The others ring, and the call is end-to-end encrypted.

A call with one person works like a phone call: when either of you hangs up, it ends for both. A group call keeps going until the last person leaves, and Join call shows how many people are in it.
